“CELLO & I”

Acrylic, Oil Pastel Crayons, and Spray Paint on Canvas

And I will give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit in you. I will take out your stony, stubborn heart and give you a tender, responsive heart. – Ezekial 36:26

I remember reading a devotional with this scripture weeks before the art competition flyer was shared with me. I decided to include it at the top left corner of my art submission. This scripture is a reminder to me of a simpler time in my life where my extracurricular activities were the highlights of my days. I hope “Cello & I” can ignite the childlike imagination in you.

UDEZE Chidi Ukwuoma

Chidi Ukwuoma is a Nigerian-American visual artist and musician raised in South Los Angeles, California. His artwork reflects his interest in history and culture. Chidi combines elements of reality with surrealism, using mixed media, photography and ceramics. The results are colorful rhythmic compositions that convey feelings of empathy with elements of surprise.

The inspiration behind his art submission comes from his desire to convey the rich cultural legacy of Leimert Park. The variety of musicians and instruments represent the history of the diverse jazz sounds that grew out of and continue to emerge from this southern California treasure. Hands raised to the sky juxtaposed to dancer ‘s on top of a visually rhythmic piano symbolize an invitation to the world to celebrate and explore the rich tapestry of art, culture and history that the Leimert Park neighborhood embodies.
